Ludwig Cancer Research congratulates Johanna Joyce on her election to EMBO, the prestigious professional organization of leading European life science researchers.
Joyce’s election to EMBO recognizes her many important contributions to our understanding of how immune and other noncancerous cells support the survival and metastasis of tumors. Joyce, who is an investigator at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Lausanne, has made particularly illuminating discoveries about how brain tumors recruit macrophages to their microenvironment, transforming the immune cells into allies. Her discoveries have generated new clues to the design of therapies that target such interactions in the tumor microenvironment to treat brain cancers and metastases, which are almost invariably lethal.
EMBO promotes excellence in the life sciences in Europe, supports talented researchers at every stage of their careers and stimulates the exchange of scientific information. The organization also helps to shape science policy based on feedback from its community of scientists.
