January 2, 2014—Professor Peter Ratcliffe, FRS, a Ludwig researcher at the University of Oxford, was knighted for services to clinical medicine in the 2014 New Year Honours List.
Professor Ratcliffe’s pioneering research focuses on understanding the mechanisms by which cells monitor and respond to hypoxia (low oxygen levels). Hypoxia is an important component of many human diseases including cancer, heart disease, stroke, vascular disease, and anaemia, with much of our current understanding of hypoxia emerging from findings by the Ratcliffe laboratory.
